Blindsided

TL;DR

  • Do we appreciate what we have?
  • Do we know how to be content without wanting things that we can't control to be different?
  • What would you give for someone you love?
  • What would you do for someone who gifts you?

“There are no facts, only interpretations.”― Friedrich Nietzsche

There was once a blind girl who hated her life and herself because she was blind. The only light in her life was a boy who loved her. He was always there for her and would do anything for her. When they grew old enough, she finally said she loved him too and that if only she could see, she would marry him.

One day - something like what Will Smith did in the Seven Pounds movie happened, and a suitable pair of eyes was donated to her. The operation was a great success and her dearest wish came true, she could see everything.

The boy who loved her, now a man, donned his favourite jeans and sunglasses and went to visit her the first day she was allowed out into the garden. They walked together hand in hand and he asked her to describe everything she saw.

At length, they stopped under the shade of a tree. Slowly removing his sunglasses and dropping to one knee, he looked up at her and asked coyly:

Now that you can see everything as you so wished my love, will you marry me?'

Speechless, she shook her head, her free hand coming up to cover her mouth.

'Please say you're nodding?', he smiled, adding; 'Insert blind joke here...', to fill in the silence.

Her brand new eyes transfixed on his, or rather where his should be. She could only say, 'I can't!'

Her mind was swirling - how is it that she never knew he too was blind? But she stubbornly refused to marry him. Heartbroken, he finally asked a friend to write a note for him to give to her. It read simply:

'Take care of my eyes, love'

Moral of the story:

Perspectives change with circumstance at times, but true colours often emerge in ourselves and others that we may not have seen before.

  • Do we appreciate what we have?
  • Do we know how to be content without wanting things that we can't control to be different?
  • What would you give for someone you love?
  • What would you do for someone who gifts you?

This is one story with many lessons - perspective, selfishness and unselfishness, gratitude...what do you see? Pardon the pun!
