Too Busy to Do It All?

TL;DR

  • Prioritize ruthlessly: Don't just try to fit everything on your schedule. Focus on scheduling the things that truly matter most (like family time) first.
  • Life is a jar: The jar represents your time and energy. The golf balls are the most important things (health, family, passions).
  • Fill with big rocks first: Focus on the big things (golf balls) in life first. The smaller things (pebbles like work and sand like unimportant tasks) can fit around them, but if you fill with sand first, there's no room for the important stuff.
  • There's always room for fun: Even with a busy schedule, make time for enjoyment (like beers with friends) because it contributes to a full life.
"The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule,
but to schedule your priorities.'
- Stephen R Covey

Finding itself in a YouTube video is the classic demonstration a philosophy lecturer gives to his class to teach some interesting life skills to his students. Still worth reading even if you know it! here goes:

Clearing the desk a lecturer set out a few objects. One of them was an empty jar, which he filled up with golf balls until no more can fit. He asked the class if they considered the jar to be full. They did.

But then he picked up the small pebbles and poured them into the jar with the golf balls. The pebbles filled the gaps between the golf balls. Again he inquired of the class if the jar was full. All agreed that indeed, it was.

After then emptying a bag of sand into the jar, which sifted itself between the balls and the pebbles, the students felt that the jar was technically full.

The pièce de résistance though was when he brought out two beers from under his desk and poured both of them into the jar!

Explaining that the golf balls represent those kind of things that were all else lost to us and only they remained, our life would still be full.

The pebbles represent the other things in life that matter, such as your job, house and car. The sand being the small stuff. If however, we try to put the sand in first, there would be no room for either the pebbles or the golf balls.

The lesson? Pay attention to the important things in life. Enjoy time with family.  Play games with the kids and there'll be time for the other things.

The beer means that no matter how full life may seem, there's always room to have a beer with a friend!
